Here's another IE-only adventure: embedded fonts. It rubs the web purists wrong, but the control freaks in us love it.

 

Absolute font control for IE users

Sometimes, when building a help or web page, only a specific typeface will do. If we work in an IE shop, embedding fonts into the web page with Microsoft's WEFT is just the ticket. It degrades nicely in other browsers, just like any other unavailable font style.

 

WEFT Installation

WEFT takes about 20 Mb of drive space, and once installed, the New Project Wizard guides you through the steps:

Creating the Embedded font files.

Creating the embedded fonts is a simple process that adds about 20K to a web page per typeface. The font file has an .eot extension, and loads into your web page quickly. To see it in action, check out the example pages with a script font:

Visit a Community Theatre site, where the hand script font is embedded in almost every page, and displays uniformly on all IE browsers:
